Tidio alternative: Klugon vs Tidio for chat and phone calls

Tidio is a website chat and help desk with an AI agent called Lyro, built around online shops. Klugon is one AI assistant that answers your phone calls and your chats together. Here is where each one fits, with Tidio's prices taken from its own site.

Your website chat is sorted. Tidio sits in the corner of every page, Lyro answers the "do you ship to Ireland?" questions, and your team picks up the rest. Then you look at the phone log. Twelve missed calls on Saturday, most of them people asking the same things Lyro answers all day in the chat window. If you are searching for a Tidio alternative, there is a good chance that gap is the reason: your chat is covered, your phone is not.

This page compares Tidio and Klugon on the same criteria, honestly. They overlap on website chat and messaging, but they are built for different businesses. Tidio is a customer service platform with live chat, ticketing, email and an AI agent, and it is especially strong for online shops on Shopify. Klugon is an AI assistant for local and service businesses that answers phone calls and chats with the same knowledge, books appointments and puts every conversation in one inbox.

Tidio does several things Klugon doesn't, and we say so in plain terms below. Tidio's prices are from Tidio's pricing page as of October 2026. Klugon's are from our own pricing page.

The short verdict

Choose Tidio if you run an online shop, especially on Shopify, and your customers reach you through the website chat, email and social messages rather than by phone. Tidio gives a support team a proper help desk: ticketing, chat assignment, macros, an email inbox, proactive chat triggers, cart nudges and Shopify order actions from the inbox. It also has a free plan and a trial that doesn't ask for a card.

Choose Klugon if a meaningful share of your customers still pick up the phone. Klugon's AI voice agent answers calls, books appointments into a built-in calendar using your opening hours, service lengths and staff, and logs each call in the same inbox as your website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger conversations. One knowledge base serves all of them, so the answer about your cancellation policy is the same whether the customer rings or types.

Use both if you are an online shop with a busy phone line. Nothing stops you keeping Tidio on the website and adding Klugon's voice product to answer calls. That is a perfectly sensible setup, and we describe it later on.

What Tidio is

Tidio describes itself as AI customer service that automates support and drives sales. It has three building blocks, sold together or separately.

The help desk

The core is a live chat widget and a shared inbox for your support team. Tidio's pricing page lists live chat, ticketing and an email management system on every plan, plus integrations for Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email. There is a live visitors list, so an agent can see who is on the site, and a live video call tool. Higher plans add automatic chat assignment, macros, permissions, departments and multi-project setups.

Lyro, the AI agent

Lyro is Tidio's AI agent. It answers customer questions from the support content you give it: FAQs you upload, your website, and imported help-centre articles. Tidio says Lyro works on any channel connected to Tidio, can follow handoff and escalation rules to pass a conversation to a person, and can run "Smart Actions" such as order updates and lead qualification. Tidio's Shopify page says Lyro answers in dozens of languages. Lyro can also be bought on its own and added to another help desk such as Zendesk or Salesforce.

Flows

Flows are Tidio's no-code automations. They open the chat at set moments (exit intent, a product category, a cart event), collect data, take quote requests and handle missed conversations. For shops, Tidio sells these as Sales Flows with cart nudges and discount offers.

The Shopify focus

Tidio is heavily used by online stores. Its Shopify app page describes a dedicated Shopify app, cart previews, order history in the inbox, and actions such as cancelling orders, issuing refunds and changing shipping addresses without leaving Tidio. Lyro can read Shopify metafields and tags to answer product questions.

What Klugon is

Klugon is an AI receptionist for small business that handles phone calls and messages with one set of knowledge. It is sold as three products, and you subscribe to the ones you need:

  • AI voice agent: answers phone calls on a Klugon number, or on your existing number through call forwarding. It also handles voice in the browser, on your Klugon public page, which you can link to or embed on your site with an iframe.
  • AI social agent: answers WhatsApp, Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger.
  • AI chatbot: the website chat widget, added with one script tag.

All three draw on the same knowledge base, the same services and opening hours, the same booking calendar and the same inbox. The assistant can answer questions, check available slots, book and cancel appointments, search your product list, take down lead details and flag conversations for your team.

What Klugon doesn't do matters just as much on a comparison page. It has no live chat takeover, no ticketing, no team assignment or labels in the inbox, no SMS, no outbound calls, no call recordings, no proactive chat triggers and no Shopify app. If those are the heart of how you work, Tidio is the stronger fit.

Tidio alternative pricing: conversations vs channels

The two companies charge for different things, so a line-by-line price comparison can mislead. Here is how each one works.

How Tidio charges

Tidio's prices below are from its pricing page as of October 2026. The page has a monthly and annual toggle, and the annual option is advertised as two months free.

Tidio planPrice shownBillable conversationsLyro AI conversations
Free$0/month50First 50 free
Starter$24.17/month10050
GrowthFrom $49.17/monthFrom 250, up to 2,000Paid quota from 50 to 1,000
PlusFrom $300/month plus usageCustomCustom
PremiumContact salesCustomFrom 3,000

The Lyro AI agent is sold as an add-on starting at $32.50/month for 50 Lyro conversations. Flows start at $24.17/month for 2,000 visitors reached. On Growth, removing Tidio branding is an add-on.

The unit that matters is the "billable conversation". Tidio's FAQ says it is a chat, ticket, email or social conversation that includes a message from a human agent. Replies from Lyro and Flows don't count as agent replies, and unanswered spam doesn't count either. Lyro conversations are counted against their own quota. In practice your Tidio bill depends on two numbers: how many conversations your team answers, and how many Lyro handles.

How Klugon charges

Klugon's prices are flat monthly plans per product, in US dollars. Yearly billing takes 20% off.

Klugon productStarterBusinessScale
AI chatbot (website)$49/month, 100 conversations$149/month, 400 conversations$499/month, 2,000 conversations
AI social agent (WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger)$79/month, 300 conversations$249/month, 1,500 conversations$449/month, 3,500 conversations
AI voice agent (phone and browser voice)$99/month, 1,000 minutes$299/month, 3,600 minutes$499/month, 6,000 minutes

A phone number is $9/month on top, and a connected WhatsApp number is $19/month. Extra voice minutes are $15 per started 100. A "conversation" is one customer thread, whether the AI handles it alone or your team gets involved. On chat and social, new conversations stop at 110% of the allowance until the next period; conversations already under way aren't cut off.

A worked cost example

Assumptions, stated plainly: a beauty clinic gets about 180 calls a month averaging three minutes each (540 minutes), and about 90 website chats. It wants the AI to book appointments in both.

  • Klugon: voice Starter at $99, one phone number at $9, and the chat product. Appointment booking in the website chat is listed from the chat Business plan, at $149. That makes $257/month, or $207/month on yearly billing ($79 + $9 + $119). The 540 minutes sit well inside the 1,000 included.
  • Tidio: the chats fit a Starter or Growth plan with a Lyro quota, which is cheaper for chat alone. But Tidio's pricing page doesn't list phone call answering, so the 180 calls still need a person, a voicemail or a separate answering service, priced on top.

If the clinic got almost no calls, Tidio would very likely be the cheaper tool. The more of your customers ring rather than type, the more the comparison shifts. Our AI receptionist cost guide works through more scenarios.

Channels: where each tool listens

Tidio's channels

Tidio covers the website chat, email and social messaging. Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp integrations are listed on every plan, and Lyro answers across them. Tidio also lists live video calls, which let an agent start a video call with a shopper from the chat. Tidio's pricing, Lyro and Shopify pages, as checked in October 2026, don't list answering ordinary phone calls.

Klugon's channels

Klugon's channels are the phone, browser voice, the website widget, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

  • Phone: inbound calls only. You can buy a number, forward your existing number to a Klugon number with your carrier's call forwarding, or point your own SIP trunk at Klugon on the voice Business plan or above. Numbers can only be added after the trial ends; during the trial you test the voice agent in the browser. Our AI phone receptionist page covers how calls are handled.
  • Website chat: a script tag that works on any HTML site, including Shopify, WordPress and Wix themes. That chat is text; browser voice is on your Klugon public page, which you can link to or embed with an iframe. See AI chatbot for your website.
  • WhatsApp: connected through Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API with your own Meta app and business number. See the WhatsApp AI chatbot page.
  • Instagram and Messenger: connected through your Facebook Page. Instagram needs Meta app review before the public can message the assistant. Details on the Instagram and Messenger automation page.

Klugon does not handle email support tickets. If a lot of your support arrives by email, Tidio's email inbox is a real advantage.

Booking appointments

This is where the two products differ most for a service business.

Booking with Tidio

Tidio's pricing page doesn't list a built-in appointment calendar. Flows include a quote request template, Lyro's Smart Actions can connect to other tools, and many businesses add a booking link to their chat. That works well when the booking system lives elsewhere and the chat's job is to point people to it.

Booking with Klugon

Klugon has a built-in booking calendar. You set your opening hours, time zone, services and their durations, staff, slot interval, buffer after bookings, minimum notice and closed dates. The assistant checks real availability and books the slot during the conversation, by phone or by chat, and gives the customer a booking reference in that same conversation.

The details that matter:

  • In chat and messaging, the AI can book, reschedule and cancel. On a phone call it can book and cancel, but not reschedule.
  • The confirmation is the reply in the conversation. Klugon doesn't send confirmation emails or texts, and it sends no reminders.
  • On voice and social Business plans and above, the assistant can also check Google, Outlook or Apple calendars and send Calendly links, after you set them up. This isn't automatic two-way sync, so keep Klugon's calendar as the source of truth.

The AI appointment booking page explains the setup in full.

Handover to your team

Tidio's handover

Tidio is built around human agents. Lyro follows handoff and escalation rules you set, and the conversation lands in the inbox where an agent replies in real time. Growth adds automatic chat assignment, and higher plans add departments. If your business depends on a person stepping into a live chat within seconds, Tidio does that properly.

Klugon's handover

Klugon's handover is a flag, not a takeover. When the assistant decides a person is needed (a complaint, a complicated quote, a question it can't answer from your knowledge), it marks the conversation as needing a person, shows a banner in the inbox and posts a notification to Slack or Zapier if you've connected them. Slack and Zapier need a voice or social Business plan or above; they aren't part of the chat plans.

Be clear about the limits before you choose:

  • The AI isn't paused when it flags a conversation, and it keeps replying.
  • There is no team assignment, no labels and no priority.
  • You can reply to WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger threads from the inbox, within Meta's 24-hour messaging window. You can't reply to website chats or phone calls from the inbox; you contact the customer yourself using the details the assistant captured.
  • On calls, Klugon can't transfer the caller to a person. It takes their details and flags the call.
  • Klugon doesn't send email or push alerts to the owner. Slack and Zapier are the notification routes.

What the AI knows

Training Lyro

Tidio's pricing page lists FAQ upload, an FAQ scraper, a website scraper and Zendesk article import as Lyro's knowledge sources, with "guidance" entries for tone and behaviour. On Shopify, Lyro can also read product metafields and tags.

Teaching Klugon

Klugon's knowledge base takes PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown and CSV files up to 20 MB each, pasted text such as FAQs and policies, single web pages, and a website scan of your homepage plus up to seven key pages. You also add a links library (booking page, map, returns policy) the assistant can share in chat. File uploads come with voice and social plans and with the chat Business plan and above.

Every assistant in your account uses the same knowledge. That is the point of having one product for phone and chat: you write your parking instructions once, and callers and chatters get the same answer.

Setup effort

Setting up Tidio

Tidio installs with a snippet on your site or through its Shopify app. Lyro reads your FAQs and website content, and you add guidance and handoff rules. A team that wants Flows, ticketing rules and departments will spend more time configuring them, as with any help desk.

Setting up Klugon

  • Website chat: paste one script tag before the closing body tag of your site. Colour, position, welcome message and label are configurable.
  • WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger: connected through Meta's developer tools with an access token. This is more involved than a one-click connection, and Instagram needs Meta app review. We don't give a minute count for it.
  • Phone: subscribe to the voice product, test in the browser during the 7-day trial, then buy a number or forward your existing one once the trial ends. Number porting isn't supported; you keep your number by forwarding it.
  • Knowledge, services and hours: upload files, add services with durations, set opening hours and staff.

Contract and trial

Tidio has a free plan, and a 7-day trial on paid plans without a card. At the end of the trial the account drops back to the Free plan unless you upgrade. Tidio's FAQ says plan changes take effect at the start of the next billing cycle.

Klugon has a 7-day free trial per product, and a card is required. The card is charged when the trial ends unless you cancel first, and cancelling during the trial costs nothing. There is no free tier that serves customers. Plans are monthly or yearly.

Privacy and compliance

Klugon is operated by a German company, Softaar Technologies UG, under the GDPR, with transfers to providers such as OpenAI, Stripe and Telnyx covered by standard contractual clauses, as listed in our privacy policy. Owners can export leads, customers, orders and conversations as CSV and delete individual records; full erasure is by email request. Klugon holds no HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001 or PCI certification. If you need SSO or a formal compliance package, Tidio lists SSO and compliance items on its Premium plan; check the detail with Tidio's sales team.

Where Tidio is the better choice

Tidio is the better choice in more situations than a vendor page usually admits.

  • You run a Shopify store. Tidio has a dedicated Shopify app, cart previews, order history in the inbox and order actions such as refunds, cancellations and address changes. Klugon has no Shopify app; its widget is simply pasted into your theme, and it doesn't see orders or carts.
  • You have a support team that answers chats live. Ticketing, chat assignment, macros, permissions, departments, live typing preview and a live visitors list are help desk features Klugon doesn't have.
  • Email is a big support channel. Tidio has an email inbox. Klugon doesn't handle email support.
  • You want proactive chat. Flows open the chat on exit intent, cart events or category pages and can offer discounts. Klugon's widget waits for the visitor to start.
  • You want to start free or without a card. Tidio's free plan and no-card trial are easier to try. Klugon asks for a card at the start of the trial.
  • You already use Zendesk or Salesforce for support. Lyro can be added to those help desks as a standalone AI agent.
  • You want live video calls with shoppers. Tidio lists them; Klugon doesn't offer video.

Where Klugon is the better choice

  • Customers phone you. Klugon answers calls with an AI voice agent around the clock, in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese or Arabic, and logs each call in your inbox. Tidio's pages don't list phone answering.
  • You sell appointments rather than parcels. Salons, clinics, studios, trades and other service businesses get a built-in booking calendar with services, durations, staff and opening hours, used by the same assistant on calls and in chat.
  • You want one answer everywhere. One knowledge base serves the phone, the website and Meta channels. Update a price once and it changes on every channel.
  • Your bill should be predictable by channel. Each Klugon product has a flat monthly price and a set allowance, and you add only the channels you need.
  • After-hours calls are where you lose business. See our after-hours answering service page for how that works without a night shift.

Running Klugon alongside Tidio

You don't have to choose. A common setup for a shop with a busy phone line:

  1. Keep Tidio on your website for live chat, ticketing and Shopify order actions.
  2. Subscribe to Klugon's voice product only, and add your shipping, returns and product FAQs to its knowledge base.
  3. After the trial, forward your shop's phone number to a Klugon number.
  4. Connect Klugon to Slack (voice Business plan and up) so calls that need a person reach your team.

That way Tidio handles the website and Klugon answers the phone. Don't run both tools on the same channel (for example two chat widgets or two bots on one WhatsApp number), or customers will get two sets of replies.

How to switch from Tidio to Klugon

If you decide to move your chat and messaging over as well:

  1. Export your knowledge. Gather the FAQs, policies and help articles you gave Lyro. Upload them to Klugon as files or paste them as text, and run the website scan.
  2. Add services, hours and staff. Set up the services customers book, with durations, and your opening hours and closed dates.
  3. Start the trial for the products you need. Test the assistant in the dashboard and the browser voice before it meets a customer.
  4. Replace the widget. Remove the Tidio snippet (or disable the Tidio Shopify app) and paste Klugon's script tag. Do this in one go so visitors never see two widgets.
  5. Move Meta channels. Disconnect WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger from Tidio, then connect them to Klugon through Meta's tools. Allow time for Instagram app review.
  6. Connect notifications. Add Slack or Zapier (voice or social Business plan and up) so flagged conversations reach a person.
  7. Add the phone. When the voice trial ends, buy a number or forward your existing one.
  8. Export your Tidio history if you need it for records before closing the account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klugon a good Tidio alternative?

It is if you want one AI assistant that answers phone calls and chats together and books appointments. If you need a help desk with ticketing, live chat assignment, an email inbox or Shopify order actions, Tidio is the stronger choice.

Does Tidio answer phone calls?

Tidio's pricing, Lyro and Shopify pages, as checked in October 2026, list live chat, email, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and live video calls, but not phone call answering. Klugon's voice product answers inbound calls with an AI voice agent.

Is Klugon cheaper than Tidio?

For website chat alone, usually not: Tidio has a free plan and a lower entry price. Klugon tends to make sense when phone calls are part of the picture, because one subscription answers them with the same knowledge as your chat.

Can Klugon take over a chat when a person is needed?

No. Klugon flags the conversation, shows it in the inbox and notifies Slack or Zapier, but the AI isn't paused. You can reply on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger from the inbox; for website chats you contact the customer using the details the assistant collected.

Does Klugon work with Shopify?

You can add the Klugon chat widget to your Shopify theme by pasting one script tag. There is no Shopify app, and Klugon doesn't read orders, carts or stock levels from Shopify.

Is there a free plan or free trial?

Klugon has a 7-day free trial per product, with a card required; you pay nothing if you cancel before it ends. There is no free plan. Tidio has a free plan and a 7-day trial without a card.

Can I use Tidio and Klugon at the same time?

Yes. A practical setup is Tidio for website chat and Klugon's voice product for phone calls. Avoid connecting both to the same channel.

Does Klugon send SMS or booking reminders?

No. Klugon sends no SMS, no reminder messages and no confirmation emails. The booking confirmation is the reply in the conversation itself.

If phone calls are the gap in your current setup, start with the voice product, test it in the browser during the trial, and read what an AI receptionist is if you want the background first. For messaging-led businesses, our ManyChat comparison and Podium comparison cover the other common tools.
