You sat through the Podium demo, or you've been on Podium for a year and the renewal is coming up. The question on your mind is a fair one: do you need the whole platform, or do you mainly need something that answers the phone and the website chat when nobody at the front desk can? If you are looking for a Podium alternative, that question decides the answer more than any feature list.

Podium and Klugon overlap less than the search results suggest. Podium is a broad platform for local businesses, mostly in the US, built around text messaging: it collects reviews by text, takes payments by text, runs text marketing campaigns and adds an AI Employee that answers calls, texts and chats. Klugon is narrower. It is one AI assistant that answers phone calls, website chats, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger from the same knowledge, books appointments, captures leads and puts every conversation in one inbox.

Podium does a lot that Klugon doesn't, including SMS of any kind, review requests, payments and text marketing. We say so plainly below. Podium's prices are from Podium's pricing page as of October 2026; Klugon's are from our pricing page.

The short verdict

Choose Podium if you are a US local business that runs on text messages: you want customers to text you, pay you by text, get review requests by text after every job and receive SMS marketing campaigns. Podium also offers card readers, phone systems, multi-location management and a dedicated customer success manager. Its AI Employee covers calls, texts, webchat, email and social, and Podium has industry versions for home services, auto dealers, aesthetics and retail.

Choose Klugon if what you really need is an AI that answers your phone and your chats with the same knowledge and books appointments, on a self-serve plan with published prices. Klugon covers WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger alongside phone and website chat, answers calls in nine languages, and starts at $99/month for the voice agent. There is no sales call and no setup fee.

Be honest with yourself about texting. If SMS is how your customers already talk to you, Klugon can't replace it. Klugon sends no text messages at all.

What Podium is

Podium describes itself as an AI-led lead conversion platform for local businesses. It is made of several products that share one inbox.

The AI Employee

Podium's AI Employee is the product it leads with. Podium says it covers "every channel – calls, text, webchat, email, social", books directly on your calendar, has access to customer records and workflows, and confirms appointments and sends reminders. Staff can set escalation rules for when a person should step in. Podium's pricing page says you can add the AI Employee to any plan, with usage rates applying.

Podium also sells industry versions. For home services, the AI Employee answers calls and books onto your dispatch board, with technician availability and a price book, and ends the call with a confirmation text to the customer.

Reviews

Podium Reviews sends review invites by text, automates invites and reminders, and uses AI to draft replies to reviews on Google and Facebook. It pulls review sites into one inbox and reports on reviews received.

Payments

Podium Payments lets you send an invoice link in a text message, take card payments in person with card readers or tap to pay on a phone, set up recurring payments and offer buy now, pay later financing. Podium says money collected is transferred to your bank on the next business day.

Text marketing and phones

Podium's text marketing sends SMS campaigns to opted-in customers, with templates, segmentation and reporting on responses and clicks. Podium Phones is a business phone system sold as an add-on.

Who Podium is built for

Podium's site lists auto dealerships, home services, aesthetics and wellness, and retail. Its 10DLC fee and carrier-verified messaging are US texting rules, and its marketing speaks to US businesses. If you are outside the US, ask Podium directly what is available in your country.

What Klugon is

Klugon is an AI receptionist for small businesses that answers calls and messages from one set of knowledge. You subscribe to the products you need:

  • AI voice agent: answers inbound phone calls on a Klugon number, or on your existing number through call forwarding. See AI phone receptionist.
  • AI social agent: answers WhatsApp, Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger.
  • AI chatbot: the website chat widget, added with one script tag. It's text; voice in the browser is on your Klugon public page, which you can link to or embed with an iframe.

All three share the knowledge base, services, opening hours, booking calendar and inbox. The assistant answers questions, checks slots, books and cancels appointments, searches your products, records lead details and flags conversations for your team.

What Klugon doesn't do, stated plainly: no SMS, no outbound calls, no call recordings, no call transfer, no payment links by text, no card readers, no review requests, no reminders, no automated follow-ups and no multi-location management. If you were relying on any of those in Podium, plan for how you'd replace them before you switch.

Podium alternative pricing: quoted plans vs published plans

How Podium charges

As of October 2026, Podium's pricing page shows three plans and says they are "designed to fit your specific business needs" and to talk to sales for details:

Podium planPrice shownSelected features listed
Core$399/monthLead conversion platform, review management with AI responses, basic automations and reporting, mobile app, 200+ integrations, phone systems add-on available, dedicated customer success manager, personalised onboarding
Pro$599/monthAdds AI Concierge, AI Reputation Specialist, AI phone call summaries, automatic lead routing, advanced automations, lead capture forms, surveys, advanced segmentation, high-volume carrier-verified messaging, lower payment processing fees
SignatureCustomAdds AI Scheduler, AI Salesperson, AI Marketer, advanced multi-location management, custom billing and processing rates

The footnotes matter:

  • A base 10DLC fee of $5/month applies to all US locations, and each additional number is $5/month.
  • Podium Phones carry a $500 network optimisation fee per location, plus usage rates.
  • Usage rates apply to the AI features.
  • Pricing "may vary based on industry, partnerships, integrations, volume, and carrier fees", and HVAC businesses are asked to contact sales.

The AI Employee's own price isn't published; the pricing page says to add it to any plan. Contract length and any free trial aren't stated on the pricing page either. Ask for both in writing during the sales call.

How Klugon charges

Klugon's plans are published and self-serve, in US dollars. Yearly billing takes 20% off.

Klugon productStarterBusinessScale
AI voice agent$99/month, 1,000 minutes$299/month, 3,600 minutes$499/month, 6,000 minutes
AI social agent (WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger)$79/month, 300 conversations$249/month, 1,500 conversations$449/month, 3,500 conversations
AI chatbot (website)$49/month, 100 conversations$149/month, 400 conversations$499/month, 2,000 conversations

Add-ons: a phone number is $9/month, a connected WhatsApp number is $19/month, and extra voice minutes are $15 per started 100. Every plan allows unlimited assistants.

A worked cost example

Assumptions: a dental practice gets around 250 calls a month at three minutes each (750 minutes), about 150 WhatsApp and Instagram messages, and a steady trickle of website chats. It wants the AI to answer questions and book check-ups.

  • Klugon: voice Starter $99 + phone number $9 + social Starter $79 + WhatsApp number $19 = $206/month. Add the chat Business plan ($149) for booking in the website chat and the total is $355/month, or $291/month on yearly billing. The 750 minutes fit inside the 1,000 included.
  • Podium: Core at $399/month plus the $5 10DLC fee is $404/month before the AI Employee add-on, AI usage rates and any phone system. The total depends on the quote.

On price alone Klugon is lower for this practice. But Podium's figure also buys review requests by text, payments and text messaging, which Klugon doesn't offer at any price. Compare what you would actually use, not just the totals. Our guide on missed calls and lost revenue helps you put a number on unanswered calls first.

Channels: text messages vs phone and Meta messaging

This is the most important difference between the two products.

Podium's channels

Podium is built on text messaging. Customers text your business number, your team and the AI Employee reply by text, payment links and review invites go out by text, and campaigns go out by SMS. Podium also lists phone calls, webchat, email and social as AI Employee channels.

Klugon's channels

Klugon covers voice and Meta messaging, not SMS.

  • Phone: inbound calls only. Buy a number, forward your existing number with your carrier's call forwarding, or connect your own SIP trunk on voice Business and above. Numbers are added after the trial ends; during the trial you test in the browser. The AI voice agent page explains how calls work, including interruptions.
  • WhatsApp: connected through Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API with your own business number. In many countries, WhatsApp rather than SMS is how customers message a business. See the WhatsApp AI chatbot page.
  • Instagram and Messenger: connected through your Facebook Page; Instagram needs Meta app review.
  • Website chat: one script tag on any site. See AI chatbot for your website.

If your customers are in the US and expect to text a local number, Podium's channel mix fits them better. If they ring you, or message you on WhatsApp or Instagram, Klugon's does.

Answering phone calls

Calls on Podium

Podium sells two things here: Podium Phones, a business phone system for your team, and the AI Employee, which answers calls. Pro lists AI phone call summaries. The home services AI Employee is described as answering calls 24/7 and booking jobs onto the dispatch board.

Calls on Klugon

Klugon's voice agent answers every inbound call while your plan is live, 24 hours a day. It speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese or Arabic, with ten voices to pick from. On a call it can describe your services, check free slots, book or cancel an appointment, search your products, look up your knowledge base and record a lead.

Limits to know:

  • It can't transfer the caller to a person. It takes their details and flags the call.
  • It doesn't record calls. Each call appears in your inbox, but the log may show only the assistant's side.
  • It can't reschedule on a call (it can in chat), and it can't take payment on a call.
  • It makes no outbound calls and sends no text afterwards.

For businesses that mostly lose work after hours, our after-hours answering service page covers the setup.

Booking appointments

Booking with Podium

Podium says its AI Employee books directly on your calendar, confirms appointments and sends reminders. The Signature plan lists an AI Scheduler. Podium's home services version books onto field service dispatch boards with technician availability. If you want booking confirmations and reminders sent by text, that is a real advantage for Podium.

Booking with Klugon

Klugon has a built-in booking calendar using your opening hours, time zone, services and durations, staff, slot interval, buffers, minimum notice and closed dates. The assistant books during the call or chat and gives the customer a reference in the same conversation. It can also check Google, Outlook or Apple calendars and send Calendly links after setup, on voice and social Business plans and above. That isn't automatic two-way sync, so keep Klugon's calendar as the source of truth.

Klugon doesn't send confirmation texts or emails and sends no reminders. If no-shows are a problem, you'll need a separate reminder tool. Full detail on the AI appointment booking page.

Reviews, payments and marketing

These are the areas where Podium clearly does more.

  • Reviews: Podium sends review invites and reminders by text and drafts replies to Google and Facebook reviews. Klugon has a simple review form on each business's public page, but it doesn't send review requests and doesn't connect to Google or Facebook reviews.
  • Payments: Podium takes payments by text link, card reader and tap to pay, with recurring billing and financing. Klugon doesn't take payments on calls, and we don't recommend it as a payments tool.
  • Marketing: Podium runs SMS campaigns with segmentation. Klugon lets you send manual email campaigns to contacts who opted in; there is no SMS, no WhatsApp broadcast and no scheduling.

If two or three of these are central to your business, Podium is likely the better buy, and Klugon is at most an add-on for languages or channels Podium doesn't cover for you.

Handover to your team

Podium's handover

Podium lets you set escalation rules for when a person should step in, and Pro adds automatic lead routing. Your team replies to customers from the shared inbox and the mobile app, by text.

Klugon's handover

Klugon flags the conversation as needing a person, shows a banner in the inbox and posts to Slack or Zapier if connected (Business plan and up). The AI isn't paused when it flags a conversation. Your team can reply to WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger threads from the inbox within Meta's 24-hour window, but not to phone calls or website chats; for those, you call or email the customer back using the details the assistant captured. There is no team assignment, no labels and no email or push alerts to the owner.

Setup and support

Setting up Podium

Podium is sold through a demo and a sales team. Its plans include personalised onboarding and a dedicated customer success manager, and Signature adds account migration and quarterly business reviews. Podium Phones carry a $500 network optimisation fee per location. For a business that wants someone to set it up for them, that is a genuine benefit.

Setting up Klugon

Klugon is self-serve. You sign up, add your business details, upload knowledge and add services and hours. The website widget is a script tag. WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger connect through Meta's developer tools with an access token, which takes more care than a one-click connection; Instagram also needs Meta app review. For the phone, you test in the browser during the trial and add a number or forward your existing one after it ends. Number porting isn't supported. There is no dedicated onboarding team, so you do the setup yourself.

Contract and trial

Podium's pricing page doesn't publish contract terms or a free trial. Ask during the sales process how long the contract runs, what the cancellation terms are, and which fees (10DLC, numbers, phone network, AI usage, payment processing) apply to you.

Klugon has a 7-day free trial per product with a card required. You're charged when the trial ends unless you cancel first; cancelling during the trial costs nothing. After that, plans run monthly or yearly.

Privacy and compliance

Klugon is run by Softaar Technologies UG, a German company, under the GDPR. Transfers to US providers such as OpenAI, Stripe and Telnyx are covered by standard contractual clauses, as listed in our privacy policy. Klugon holds no HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001 or PCI certification, so a US medical or dental practice that needs a BAA should not use it for patient data. If that applies to you, ask Podium what it offers for your industry.

Where Podium is the better choice

  • Your customers text you. Two-way SMS is Podium's foundation. Klugon has no SMS at all.
  • You want review requests after every job. Podium sends review invites by text and helps you reply to reviews. Klugon doesn't.
  • You want to get paid by text or in person. Text-to-pay links, card readers, tap to pay, recurring billing and financing are Podium features Klugon doesn't have.
  • You run SMS marketing. Podium's campaigns, segmentation and opt-in tools are built for it.
  • You want confirmation texts and reminders. Podium's AI Employee confirms appointments and sends reminders; Klugon sends neither.
  • You're a US home services business on a field service system. Podium's home services AI Employee books onto the dispatch board with technician availability and a price book.
  • You have several locations. Podium's Signature plan includes multi-location management. Klugon supports one address per account.
  • You'd rather someone set it up for you. Podium includes onboarding and a success manager.

Where Klugon is the better choice

  • You want published, self-serve pricing. Every Klugon price is on the website, starting at $99/month for the voice agent, with no sales call.
  • Your customers use WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger. Klugon answers all three alongside phone and website chat, in one inbox.
  • You serve customers outside the US or in several languages. Calls are answered in nine languages, and WhatsApp is the main messaging channel in many countries.
  • You mainly need calls and chats answered. If you don't need reviews, payments or SMS marketing, you don't pay for them.
  • You want one knowledge base for everything. The same answers go to callers, website visitors and Instagram followers.
  • You want to try it before committing. The 7-day trial lets you test the assistant in the browser before any customer hears it.

How to switch from Podium to Klugon

  1. List what you use in Podium. Write down which features you rely on each week: AI Employee, reviews, payments, texting, campaigns, phones. Anything Klugon doesn't do needs another home or needs to stop.
  2. Check your contract. Find your renewal date and notice period before you cancel anything.
  3. Collect your knowledge. Gather the FAQs, prices, policies and service descriptions your Podium AI Employee uses, and upload them to Klugon.
  4. Set up services, hours and staff in Klugon's booking calendar.
  5. Start the trial for voice, and for social or chat if you need them. Test the assistant in the browser.
  6. Connect Meta channels and the website widget. Paste the script tag in place of Podium's webchat, and connect WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
  7. Move the phone. Once the voice trial ends, buy a Klugon number or forward your main business number to one. If your number is on Podium Phones, ask Podium how to port it to a carrier you control first, then set up forwarding from there.
  8. Connect Slack or Zapier (Business plan and up) so flagged conversations reach your team.
  9. Export your data from Podium (contacts, reviews, payment history) before your account closes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klugon a good Podium alternative?

It is if you mainly need an AI to answer phone calls and chats, including WhatsApp and Instagram, and book appointments, on a self-serve plan. If you rely on SMS, review requests, payments or text marketing, Podium does things Klugon doesn't.

How much does Podium cost?

As of October 2026, Podium's pricing page shows Core at $399/month, Pro at $599/month and Signature as custom pricing, plus a $5/month 10DLC fee for US locations and usage rates for AI. The AI Employee is an add-on whose price isn't published.

Does Klugon send text messages?

No. Klugon has no SMS of any kind: no texting, no missed-call text-back, no confirmations and no reminders by text. It answers phone calls and messages on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and your website.

Can Klugon collect Google reviews like Podium?

No. Klugon doesn't send review requests or connect to Google or Facebook reviews. Each business has a simple review form on its public Klugon page, but that is not a review management tool.

Can Klugon take payments?

Klugon isn't a payments tool. It doesn't take payments on calls, and it has no card readers or text-to-pay links. If payments matter, keep a dedicated payment provider.

Can I keep my phone number if I switch?

Yes, by forwarding it to a Klugon number using your carrier's call forwarding, or by connecting your own SIP trunk on voice Business and above. Klugon doesn't port numbers.

Does Klugon transfer calls to my staff?

No. It takes the caller's details, flags the conversation and, on the Business plan and up, notifies Slack or Zapier. Someone on your team then calls the customer back.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, 7 days per product, with a card required. You pay nothing if you cancel before the trial ends. Phone numbers become available once the trial is over.

If texting isn't central to your business and you mostly need the phone and chats answered, Klugon is worth a trial. If your interest is more in website chat for an online shop, see our Tidio comparison; if you are weighing a human answering service instead, see Klugon vs Smith.ai.
