Most people comparing answering services are looking at a bill. You signed up with AnswerConnect because calls were going to voicemail, and real people started answering them around the clock. Then the minutes added up. Every call is rounded up to the next minute, the message-taking time after the call counts too, and a month with a busy week can push you into overage.

If that's why you're reading about an AnswerConnect alternative, it's a fair question to ask. It's also fair to ask the opposite one: which of your calls really need a person? AnswerConnect is built on the idea that callers would rather talk to people, and for some calls they are right.

This page compares Klugon, an AI receptionist, with AnswerConnect's live answering service. Every AnswerConnect fact comes from AnswerConnect's own website and pricing guide, checked in October 2026. We've included the cases where AnswerConnect is clearly the better choice, because there are several.

The short verdict

Choose AnswerConnect if your calls need a human. That covers callers who should be transferred to you live, conversations that need empathy or judgement, messages taken properly by someone who understood the caller, Spanish-speaking callers who want a person, or healthcare work where you need a HIPAA option. AnswerConnect's receptionists work 24/7, all year, and the company has no contracts or notice period.

Choose Klugon if most of your calls are routine questions and bookings, and per-minute billing is getting expensive. Klugon's voice plans are flat: $99 a month includes 1,000 voice minutes. The AI answers at any hour, books into a calendar, works in nine languages, and can also answer WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat. It can't transfer a caller to you. It flags the conversation for your team, and you call back.

Or combine them. Many businesses send routine and after-hours calls to an AI and keep live receptionists for the calls that matter most. We cover how below.

What AnswerConnect is

AnswerConnect is a 24/7 human answering service. Its live call answering puts a receptionist on your calls day or night, every day of the year, and the company is open about its position: its pricing guide says "Always people, not bots" and "No AI agents". Its homepage FAQ says receptionists work from distraction-free home environments.

You tell AnswerConnect why people usually contact you, and it builds a custom call flow. Then you forward your calls. Receptionists can give information about your business, transfer calls, schedule appointments or take messages. You see every interaction in the AnswerConnect app on mobile or desktop, and get notifications in the app, by email and by SMS. You can set your status, such as "In a Meeting" or "On Vacation", so receptionists know whether to put callers through.

The pricing guide lists a lot as included on every plan: up to three dedicated business phone numbers, call recordings, caller recognition, spam call blocking, time-based routing and on-call scheduling, CRM integrations, and appointment scheduling through Setmore, which AnswerConnect owns. Live chat, answered by people, comes with the Growth plan and above. There are paid add-ons for Spanish call answering, HIPAA compliance, call transcriptions, live operator relay, outbound follow-up calls and phone menu routing.

What Klugon is

Klugon is an AI receptionist for small businesses. It answers your business phone with a natural-sounding AI voice, answers questions from information you give it, books appointments into a built-in calendar and captures the details of callers who need your team. It's on 24/7 whenever your plan is live.

The same assistant can also answer your website chat and reply on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, sold as separate products. All conversations land in one inbox.

Klugon is self-serve. You sign up, add your services and knowledge, test the assistant by talking to it in your browser, and connect a phone number after the 7-day trial. There's no sales call and no one at Klugon answering your calls. If a caller needs a person, that's you or your staff, by call-back.

AnswerConnect alternative pricing: per minute vs flat

How AnswerConnect charges

AnswerConnect's plans and pricing page lists three main plans, as of October 2026:

AnswerConnect planMinutesMonthly priceSetup feePer additional minute
Entry200$350$49.99$2.50
Growth300$395None$1.85
Standard400$575$49.99$1.85

Larger plans start at 550 minutes for $795 a month and go up to 100,000 minutes, with the overage rate falling to $1.75 a minute from 5,000 minutes. The Growth plan includes more minutes than Entry for $45 more, has no setup fee and adds live chat, which is why AnswerConnect marks it as best value.

How minutes are counted matters as much as the price. AnswerConnect's terms on that page:

  • All interactions are rounded up to the nearest minute and billed in one-minute increments.
  • The first 30 interactions under 30 seconds in each billing cycle are free.
  • The homepage FAQ says minutes are based on total handling time, which includes the after-call work of taking a message.

The AnswerConnect pricing guide (PDF) lists paid add-ons: call transcriptions ($30), HIPAA compliance ($40), live operator relay ($40), outbound follow-up ($20), phone menu routing ($30) and Spanish call answering ($30). The guide doesn't say how often those charges apply, so ask.

How Klugon charges

Klugon's voice product has three tiers, in US dollars, as of October 2026, on the Klugon pricing page:

Klugon voice planMonthlyBilled yearly (per month)Voice minutes per monthPhone numbers allowed
Starter$99$791,0001
Business$299$2393,6003
Scale$499$3996,000unlimited

A phone number is $9 a month. Extra minutes are $15 per started 100 minutes, which works out at 15 cents a minute. Yearly billing takes 20% off and is paid once a year. There's no setup fee and no minimum term on monthly plans.

A worked cost example

Assumptions, so you can swap in your own numbers: a dental practice gets 300 calls a month. A typical call lasts 1 minute 40 seconds, and there's a minute of message-taking or booking work after half of them.

AnswerConnect. Rounded up, each call bills as 2 minutes: 600 minutes. Add 150 minutes of after-call work and it's 750 minutes. That's the 750-minute plan at $1,050 a month, or the Standard plan at $575 plus 350 extra minutes at $1.85 ($647.50), which is $1,222.50. A few of the shortest calls would fall under the free allowance, so the real figure would be a little lower. Add $40 if you need the HIPAA add-on.

Klugon. Calls are counted as voice minutes, with no after-call work because there is no message-taking step. Around 500 minutes fits easily inside Starter's 1,000: $99 plus $9 for the number, $108 a month.

That's a big gap, and it's real. But it isn't a like-for-like comparison. The AnswerConnect price buys a person on every call, live transfer and messages written by someone who listened. The Klugon price buys an AI that books the routine calls and leaves the rest for your team to call back. If 250 of those 300 calls are "do you have anything Thursday?" and 50 need a person, the useful question is what those 50 are worth, and how quickly you can call them back.

Who answers, and what callers hear

AnswerConnect's receptionists

Callers reach a trained person who follows the script you agreed, adapts when the call doesn't, and can recognise a returning caller. AnswerConnect says it answers 99% of its clients' calls within one to four rings. For callers who are upset, elderly, confused or simply prefer a human, that matters, and AnswerConnect builds its whole brand on it.

Klugon's AI voice

Klugon answers in your business's name with a natural-sounding AI voice. You choose from ten voices and write your own greeting. Callers talk normally, with no keypad menus, and can interrupt; the AI stops talking when they do. It can answer in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic.

It answers from what you've taught it: services and prices, opening hours, your knowledge base. Where it doesn't have an answer, set it to take details and hand over rather than guess. The default greeting doesn't say it's an AI, so we suggest a greeting that does.

The booking is the AI's job. The sore crown isn't. On AnswerConnect, a receptionist could transfer that caller to the on-call dentist straight away, if you'd set that up. On Klugon, the practice gets a flag and calls back. If your patients need the first, that's a clear point for AnswerConnect.

Call transfer and handover

How AnswerConnect connects callers

AnswerConnect's call routing and transfer service is available 24/7. Receptionists connect callers to the right person or department using the rules you give them, with time-based routing and on-call scheduling for after hours. Your status in the app tells them whether you're taking calls. The pricing guide also lists a live operator relay add-on, where the receptionist takes the call, collects the details and relays it to you live.

What Klugon does instead

Klugon can't transfer a call to a person. There's no live transfer and no transfer number setting. Instead:

  • The AI takes the caller's name, number and reason as a lead, and tells them your team will call back.
  • It marks the conversation as needing a person, shown with a "Needs a person" banner in your inbox.
  • If you've connected Slack or Zapier, which needs the Business plan or above, it posts the handover there, so it reaches your phone.
  • The call shows in your inbox with the AI's side of the conversation. Don't count on a full two-sided transcript.

Klugon doesn't send SMS or email alerts and doesn't record calls. AnswerConnect does all three: SMS and email notifications, and call recordings, are on its included list. If your team works from text alerts, that's a difference to weigh. Our guide to handing calls to staff covers how to run a call-back routine that works.

Appointment booking

AnswerConnect includes premium access to Setmore, its scheduling app, on every plan at no extra charge. Receptionists book into it during calls, and its appointment scheduling page says Setmore syncs with Google Calendar, Office 365 and others. Because a person books, it can cope with unusual rules, as long as they're written down.

Klugon books into its own built-in calendar. You set opening hours, service lengths, which staff member does what, buffers, minimum notice and how far ahead people can book. During a call the AI checks free slots, books one and gives the caller a reference. It can cancel bookings by phone; rescheduling by phone isn't available yet, though it works in chat and messaging. On the Business plan and above, Klugon can also check Google, Outlook or Apple calendars and send Calendly links once connected, though that isn't an automatic two-way sync. Klugon doesn't send confirmations or reminders after the call. See AI appointment booking for the detail.

Around-the-clock answering

Both answer 24/7. AnswerConnect has people on shift 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and its plans don't charge differently by time of day; you're paying per minute either way. Klugon answers whenever your plan is live and your number is routed to it, at the same flat price.

Where they differ is what happens at 2am. An AnswerConnect receptionist can reach your on-call person live. Klugon books what it can and leaves the rest flagged for the morning. For a plumber with emergency call-outs, that's a real difference. For a salon whose late-night callers just want a Saturday appointment, it isn't. The after-hours answering service page covers how Klugon handles calls when you're closed.

Channels and languages

AnswerConnect is phone-first, with live chat on its Growth plan and above, answered by people rather than bots. Its bilingual answering service offers receptionists fluent in English and Spanish, on calls and in chat; Spanish call answering is a paid add-on in the pricing guide. The pages we checked don't mention WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger.

Klugon covers more channels and languages, through AI:

  • Phone and browser voice in the voice plans.
  • WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger in the social plans from $79 a month. These need your own Meta business setup, and Instagram needs Meta's app review.
  • Website chat in the chat plans from $49 a month, added by pasting one script tag. See AI chatbot for your website.
  • Nine phone languages, chosen per assistant.

If your Spanish-speaking callers want a person, AnswerConnect's bilingual team fits. If your customers speak several languages, or message more than they call, Klugon covers more ground.

Healthcare and compliance

AnswerConnect offers HIPAA compliance as a paid add-on ($40 in its pricing guide), and notes that once added it can't be reversed. For US medical and dental practices that need a vendor handling protected health information under HIPAA, that's a reason to choose AnswerConnect.

Klugon is not HIPAA compliant and doesn't sign business associate agreements. It's operated by a German company under the GDPR, with its sub-processors listed in the privacy policy. If you run a medical practice, Klugon can handle bookings and general questions, but clinical questions and anything involving symptoms must go to your staff, as in the sample call above.

Setup and keeping your number

Getting started with AnswerConnect

You talk to AnswerConnect about why people call you, and it builds a custom call flow and script. You pay the $49.99 setup fee on Entry and Standard (Growth has none), then forward your calls and chats. Up to three dedicated business numbers are included. There's no free trial on the pages we checked, but you can make a free demo call to hear how calls are answered.

Getting started with Klugon

  1. Start the 7-day trial. A card is required, and you're charged when it ends unless you cancel.
  2. Add your business details, hours, services with prices and durations, and staff.
  3. Add knowledge: FAQs, policies, documents.
  4. Write a greeting, choose a voice and language.
  5. Test it by talking to it in your browser. You can't add a phone number during the trial.
  6. After the trial, get a Klugon number at $9 a month and forward your existing number to it, all calls or only unanswered ones. Klugon doesn't port numbers. See keeping your number with call forwarding.

On Business and above you can connect your own SIP trunk instead.

Contracts and cancelling

AnswerConnect's pricing guide says "No hidden fees, no contracts, no notice period", and its plans page says you can change plans at any time. That's flexible, and it's one of the better terms among human answering services.

Klugon's monthly plans also have no minimum term. Yearly plans are paid upfront at 20% off. The trial is free if you cancel within 7 days. So on contracts, neither locks you in; the difference is in the price model.

Where AnswerConnect is the better choice

AnswerConnect is the better choice when:

  • Callers must reach a person live. AnswerConnect transfers calls using your routing rules and on-call schedules. Klugon can't transfer at all.
  • Calls are complex or emotional. Complaints, emergencies, bereavement, anxious patients. A trained receptionist responds to tone and context in a way an AI can't.
  • Callers expect a human. AnswerConnect is explicit that it uses no AI agents. If your clients would be put off by an AI, that settles it.
  • Messages need to be right first time. A receptionist who listened writes a clear message, and you get it by app, email or SMS. Klugon has no email or SMS alerts.
  • You need call recordings. AnswerConnect includes them. Klugon doesn't record calls.
  • You need HIPAA. AnswerConnect sells a HIPAA add-on. Klugon has no HIPAA compliance.
  • Your Spanish-speaking callers want a person. AnswerConnect has bilingual receptionists.
  • You want outbound calls. AnswerConnect's outbound follow-up add-on calls leads back. Klugon makes no outbound calls.

Where Klugon is the better choice

Klugon is the better choice when:

  • Per-minute billing is the problem. $99 a month covers 1,000 voice minutes, and there is no after-call message-taking time to pay for.
  • Most calls are routine. Prices, hours, availability and bookings are what the AI handles well.
  • You want booking without a script. The AI books from your own hours, services and staff, and you can change them yourself at any time.
  • You serve callers in other languages. Nine phone languages, not just English and Spanish.
  • Customers message as well as call. One assistant for phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and website chat, in one inbox.
  • You'd rather run it yourself. Change a price or a policy in the dashboard and it's live on the next call, with no ticket to raise.

For the general case, our page on an AI answering service vs a call centre covers it without brand names, and the Moneypenny alternative and Smith.ai comparison pages compare other human services.

Using both: AI for volume, people for the rest

You don't have to pick one. Some set-ups that work:

  • Overflow to AI. Your front desk answers first; unanswered calls forward to Klugon, which books what it can and flags the rest.
  • People by day, AI by night. Keep AnswerConnect in office hours, when transfers matter, and forward evenings to Klugon to cut the minute count.
  • Separate lines. A main line on Klugon for bookings and questions, and an urgent or existing-client line on AnswerConnect.

Because AnswerConnect has no contract or notice period, you can drop to a smaller minute plan while you test this, and adjust before the next billing cycle.

How to switch from AnswerConnect to Klugon

  1. Pull your usage. Look at your minutes in the AnswerConnect app for the last two or three months. Note which calls were transfers, which were messages and which were simple questions or bookings.
  2. Reuse your script. Your AnswerConnect call flow is a ready-made brief. Put the FAQs, policies and greeting into Klugon's knowledge base and assistant settings.
  3. Decide what happens to transfers. For each call type AnswerConnect transfers today, choose: call-back from a flag, or keep a human line for it.
  4. Set up and test in the trial. Add services, hours and staff. Talk to the assistant in your browser using your ten most common calls.
  5. Connect notifications. Link Slack or Zapier so handovers reach you quickly.
  6. Go live gradually. After the trial, add a Klugon number and forward unanswered or after-hours calls first. Keep AnswerConnect on a smaller plan meanwhile.
  7. Move fully when you're happy, then cancel or downgrade AnswerConnect. There's no notice period to wait out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klugon a good AnswerConnect alternative?

Yes, for businesses whose calls are mostly routine questions and bookings and who want a flat price instead of per-minute billing. If you need live call transfer, call recordings, HIPAA, SMS alerts or a person on every call, AnswerConnect is the better fit.

How much does AnswerConnect cost compared with Klugon?

As of October 2026, AnswerConnect starts at $350 a month for 200 minutes plus a $49.99 setup fee, with Growth at $395 for 300 minutes and Standard at $575 for 400 minutes. Calls are rounded up to the nearest minute. Klugon's voice plans are $99, $299 and $499 a month for 1,000, 3,600 and 6,000 minutes, plus $9 a month per phone number.

Can Klugon transfer calls like AnswerConnect?

No. Klugon can't put a caller through to a person. It takes their details, flags the conversation in your inbox, and notifies Slack or Zapier if connected, so your team can call back.

Does Klugon use real people?

No. Klugon is an AI receptionist. No one at Klugon listens to or answers your calls. AnswerConnect uses only human receptionists.

Is Klugon HIPAA compliant?

No. Klugon doesn't offer HIPAA compliance or business associate agreements. AnswerConnect sells HIPAA compliance as an add-on.

Is there a contract with either?

Neither locks you in. AnswerConnect says it has no contracts and no notice period. Klugon's monthly plans have no minimum term, and the 7-day trial, which needs a card, is free if you cancel before it ends.

Can I keep my business number?

Yes. With Klugon you forward your existing number to a Klugon number after the trial, either all calls or only the ones you miss. Klugon doesn't port numbers.

Does Klugon answer in Spanish?

Yes, the AI can answer calls in Spanish, as well as English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic. You set the language per assistant. If your callers want a Spanish-speaking person, AnswerConnect's bilingual receptionists are the better choice.

Before you decide, sort a month of calls into "needed a person" and "didn't". That split, more than any price table, tells you which service you need, and whether a mix of both would serve you best.
