The phone by the host stand rings through the whole of Friday service. Half the calls are "have you got a table for four at eight?", a quarter are "do you do gluten-free?" or "is there parking?", and the rest are suppliers, lost scarves and someone wanting the private dining room for forty in December. An AI that answers those calls is an obvious idea, and Slang AI is one of the best-known names doing it for restaurants. If you're looking for a Slang AI alternative, it's usually because of price, because you don't use one of the reservation platforms it connects to, or because your guests message you as much as they ring.

This page compares Slang AI and Klugon honestly. The short version is that they're different kinds of product. Slang AI is a restaurant specialist that plugs into your reservation book. Klugon is a general AI receptionist for small businesses that a restaurant can set up for its own calls, WhatsApp and website, but which does not connect to any reservation or POS system.

Every Slang AI fact here comes from Slang AI's own website, checked in October 2026. Where something isn't published, we say so. Check Slang AI's pricing page for the current position before you decide.

The short verdict on a Slang AI alternative

Pick Slang AI if your bookings live in OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy or Yelp and you want the AI to book straight into that system. Pick it too if you need calls put through to staff, text confirmations to guests, private-event leads sent to Tripleseat or Perfect Venue, or support for many languages. That's what Slang AI is built for, and Klugon can't do any of it.

Pick Klugon if you're a smaller restaurant, café or takeaway that doesn't use a reservation platform (or is happy to send online bookers to its link), wants a far lower monthly price, and wants one assistant across the phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and the website.

Be clear about the gap. Klugon has no integrations with OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy, ResDiary or any POS. If your restaurant needs the AI to write into one of those, choose a restaurant specialist.

What each product is

Slang AI in brief

Slang AI sells an AI phone assistant for restaurants. Its homepage calls the assistant "Superhost" and says it identifies VIPs and frequent diners so they can reach staff directly, sends staff instant alerts about things such as private event enquiries and lost items, and switches between 97 languages, even mid-call. The Slang AI homepage lists official integrations with OpenTable, Tripleseat, Resy, SevenRooms, Perfect Venue and Yelp. Pricing is per location, with Core, Premium and Enterprise plans.

Klugon in brief

Klugon is an AI receptionist for small businesses of many kinds, restaurants among them. It's sold as three products: an AI voice agent for phone calls, an AI social agent for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, and an AI chatbot for your website. A restaurant can use the voice agent alone or add the others. The AI answers from your menu, allergen matrix, opening hours and policies, books into Klugon's own built-in calendar, takes enquiries and flags anything your team needs to deal with. There's a full guide for restaurants on how that works in practice.

Does Slang AI connect to POS and reservation systems?

This is the question that decides most comparisons, so here's exactly what Slang AI's own site says, as of October 2026.

  • Reservation platforms: yes. The pricing page says Slang AI integrates "with leading reservation platforms (including OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp, and Resy)", and "Full Reservation Integrations" is listed on the Core plan. The homepage adds Tripleseat and Perfect Venue for private events.
  • POS systems: not listed. Neither the pricing page nor the homepage names a POS integration. On Slang AI's own comparison with Loman, dated February 2026, Toast and Square integrations are described as "in development", and phone orders are described as being redirected to online ordering systems rather than taken by the AI.
  • Custom integrations: listed on the Enterprise plan.

So if what you need is reservations written straight into OpenTable, SevenRooms or Resy, Slang AI does that. If you need phone orders placed into your POS, Slang AI's own site doesn't currently say it does, and a product built for phone ordering, such as Loman, may fit better. Our Loman AI alternative page covers that.

Klugon connects to neither kind of system. It has its own booking calendar, and that's it for reservations.

Pricing for a restaurant

Slang AI's pricing, as of October 2026

Slang AI's pricing page shows three plans, each with a "Get a quote" button:

  • Core: starting at $399 per location. Reservation management, text links and confirmations, reservation insights, full reservation integrations, VIP call handling, special requests collection, guest satisfaction measurement, restaurant prompts and Spanish-language support.
  • Premium: starting at $599 per location. Everything in Core plus Superhost, 97 languages, custom branding, reservation cross-selling, real-time alerts, a smart inbox and private events capture, among other items.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing, with custom workflows and integrations, reporting and dashboards, SSO and MFA, and dedicated support.

The page doesn't state whether the price is monthly with any minimum term, whether there's a setup fee, how many calls are included, or whether there's a free trial. Those are all "not published", so ask in the quote.

Klugon's pricing

Klugon's voice agent is $99 a month on Starter (1,000 minutes, one number), $299 on Business (3,600 minutes, three numbers) and $499 on Scale (6,000 minutes, unlimited numbers). Yearly billing is 20% less. Each phone number is $9 a month, and extra minutes are $15 per started 100. Messaging products are separate: the social agent starts at $79 a month for 300 conversations (plus $19 a month for a connected WhatsApp number), and the website chatbot starts at $49 a month. All prices are on the pricing page.

A worked example for one restaurant

Say a 60-cover neighbourhood restaurant gets 25 calls a day, each about two minutes. That's about 1,500 minutes a month. It also gets around 150 WhatsApp and Instagram messages a month, mostly booking questions.

  • Slang AI Core: from $399 a month for the location, before any extras or anything the quote adds. Messaging via WhatsApp or Instagram isn't listed on its pricing page.
  • Klugon: voice Starter $99, plus $9 for the number, plus five started blocks of 100 extra minutes at $15 ($75), comes to $183. Add the social agent Starter at $79 plus $19 for the WhatsApp number and the total is $281 a month, covering phone, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. If you'd rather avoid overage, voice Business at $299 plus $9 includes 3,600 minutes.

Klugon is cheaper on paper. But you're not buying the same thing. For $399, Slang AI writes bookings into your reservation platform and texts guests confirmations. Klugon at $183 books into its own calendar and doesn't text anyone. Whether the difference is worth it depends entirely on whether you use one of those platforms.

Reservations and booking

How Slang AI books

Slang AI books into the reservation platform you already use. Because it's integrated, it sees the real availability your hosts see, and the booking appears in your book like any other. The Core plan also lists special requests collection, and Premium lists reservation cross-selling. That's the main reason restaurants with OpenTable, SevenRooms or Resy choose a restaurant specialist.

How Klugon books

Klugon books into its own built-in calendar, which thinks in slots rather than tables. Restaurants make it fit by creating a bookable "service" for each party size ("Table for 2, 90 minutes", "Table for 4, 2 hours") and listing which tables can take each one, the way a salon lists stylists. Klugon then offers a time only if one of those tables is free for the full length. You also set opening hours, slot interval, buffer, minimum notice, how far ahead to book and closed dates.

What it doesn't have:

  • no floor plan, cover count or table combining;
  • no connection to OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy, ResDiary or any other reservation system;
  • no deposits or no-show fees;
  • no confirmation texts or emails, and no reminders. The confirmation is the reply in the same conversation, with a booking reference;
  • on a phone call, the AI can book and cancel but not move a booking. In chat and on WhatsApp it can.

If you already run your book in a reservation platform, the realistic options with Klugon are to have the AI send online bookers your booking link and take everything else, or to hold a block of tables in Klugon and keep the rest in your platform, with the discipline that brings. Our OpenTable alternative comparison and the guide to taking reservations 24/7 go into those options. The AI appointment scheduler page explains the booking engine in general.

Handover to staff

Handover on Slang AI

Slang AI's pricing FAQ says it "immediately forwards callers to a human when needed", and the homepage says VIPs and frequent diners can skip the AI and reach staff directly. Premium lists real-time alerts, and the homepage mentions instant alerts for things like private event enquiries and lost items.

Handover on Klugon

Klugon can't put a caller through to anyone. When a call needs a person (a complaint, a late-arriving table, a large party, an allergy question your matrix doesn't cover), the AI flags the conversation. It shows as "Needs a person" in your inbox and on the Business plan and up, a notification goes to Slack or Zapier. The AI takes the caller's details and tells them someone will call back. Your manager then calls them from the restaurant phone.

That works for a lot of restaurant calls, which can wait until after the rush. It doesn't work for a guest who's outside and lost, or a regular who expects to speak to the GM. Klugon doesn't send email alerts and doesn't record calls.

Texting and messaging channels

Texting on Slang AI

Slang AI's Core plan lists "text links and confirmations", described on its pricing page as sending real-time text messages to guests, including reservation confirmations, ordering links and wine lists. WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger are not listed as channels on its pricing page.

Messaging on Klugon

Klugon has no SMS at all. What it does have is WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger and a website chat widget, answered by the same assistant with the same menu and rules as the phone. For restaurants, a lot of booking and "are you open on bank holiday Monday?" traffic now arrives on Instagram and WhatsApp late at night, and Klugon answers it.

Some setup is involved. WhatsApp needs a Meta WhatsApp Business setup, Instagram needs Meta app review before the public can message the assistant, and the widget is a script tag you paste into your site. The WhatsApp AI chatbot page explains the Meta side.

Both products answer menu questions. On Klugon, you upload your menu, allergen matrix and policies as PDF, Word, CSV or pasted text, and the AI answers from them. It answers from your own documents and flags anything it doesn't know rather than guessing.

Allergens are where a restaurant should be strict with any AI. In the UK, the Food Standards Agency's allergen guidance for food businesses sets out what you must tell customers about the 14 allergens. A sensible rule for the assistant: list which dishes contain an allergen, never describe a dish as safe, always tell the guest to speak to staff, and flag the conversation so the kitchen knows. This applies to Slang AI and Klugon alike.

Languages

Slang AI's Core plan lists Spanish-language support. Premium and Enterprise add Superhost, which Slang AI says detects and switches between 97 languages, even mid-call.

Klugon answers calls in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic on every plan. You choose the language for each assistant. If you need many more languages than that, Slang AI's Premium plan covers far more.

Setup and getting live

Setting up Slang AI

Slang AI's FAQ says setup takes "less than 30 minutes of your time" and you can go live the same day. You get a new local or toll-free number, and keeping your existing number is something to discuss with its onboarding team. White Glove Support is listed on some plans.

Setting up Klugon

Klugon is self-serve:

  1. Sign up and add your business details, opening hours and address.
  2. Start the voice trial. A card is required.
  3. Upload your menu, allergen matrix, drinks list, private dining pack and policies. Paste your top FAQs.
  4. Create your table services and list the tables in each. Set notice, buffer and closed dates.
  5. Write the handover rules: large parties, complaints, allergy questions not covered, late arrivals, press and suppliers.
  6. Pick a voice, write the greeting and test in the browser.
  7. After the trial converts to a paid plan, buy a number and forward the restaurant line to it.

During the trial you can't buy a phone number, so real calls start after the trial ends. Klugon doesn't port numbers; you keep yours by forwarding.

A sample call on Klugon

A sample call. The restaurant and the caller are made up, and the voice on Klugon is AI-generated. It shows what the AI does without a reservation platform behind it.

AI: Hello, thank you for calling The Larder on Mill Street. How can I help?

Caller: Hi, have you got a table for four on Saturday, around half seven?

AI: Let me check. I have 7:15 or 8:00 on Saturday for four people. Would either of those work?

Caller: 8:00 is fine. One of us is coeliac, is that OK?

AI: I can tell you which dishes on our menu contain gluten, but I can't promise any dish is safe for coeliac guests. Please mention it to your server when you arrive, and I'll pass a note to the team now so the kitchen knows in advance. Can I take a name for the booking?

Caller: Sam Patel.

AI: Thank you, Sam. You're booked for four at 8:00 on Saturday. Your reference is LR-2291. Is there anything else?

Caller: Actually, we might be six. Can you hold a bigger table just in case?

AI: I can't hold a second table, but I can flag this for the manager, who'll call you back about whether six is possible. Is this the best number?

Caller: Yes. Thanks.

Behind the scenes: a four-person table was booked into a free two-hour slot in Klugon's calendar, the booking showed in the dashboard and in Slack, and the conversation was flagged "Needs a person" with a note about the coeliac guest and the possible party of six. No confirmation text was sent, because Klugon doesn't send texts. On Slang AI, the same call would have gone into your reservation platform, and Core lists confirmation texts. That's the trade-off in one call.

What to measure in the first month

Whichever product you trial, measure the same things so the comparison is fair:

  • Answered calls during service. How many calls came in between 18:00 and 21:00, and how many ended with an answer or a booking rather than a hang-up.
  • Bookings taken by the AI. On Klugon, the analytics page counts bookings and shows them by day and hour.
  • Flags that needed a person. How many, what for, and how quickly someone called back. If the same question keeps getting flagged, add the answer to the knowledge base.
  • Questions without a good answer. Klugon's insights page lists them. Each one is something to teach the assistant.
  • Staff time. Ask your hosts whether they picked up the phone less. It's the measure that matters most and the hardest to fake.

Where Slang AI is the better choice

  • You use OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy or Yelp for reservations. Slang AI books straight into them. Klugon can't connect to any reservation platform.
  • You take private events through Tripleseat or Perfect Venue. Slang AI lists both.
  • You want calls put through to staff. Slang AI says it forwards callers to a human when needed. Klugon only flags and someone calls back.
  • You want text confirmations and links sent to guests. Slang AI's Core plan includes them. Klugon has no SMS.
  • You need many languages on the phone. Premium covers 97. Klugon covers nine.
  • You run several locations and want enterprise reporting, SSO and custom workflows. Klugon has one address per account and no multi-location features.
  • You want a restaurant specialist. Slang AI's product, prompts and support are built around restaurants only.

Where Klugon is the better choice

  • You don't use a reservation platform, or you're happy for online bookers to use your own link while the AI handles phone and message bookings into a simple calendar.
  • Price matters. Klugon's voice Starter is $99 a month plus a $9 number, against Slang AI's Core from $399 per location.
  • Your guests message you. One assistant answers the phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and the website chat, into one inbox, and you can reply yourself on the messaging channels.
  • You're not only a restaurant. A café that also does events, a deli, a bakery or a food truck can use Klugon's general booking and product catalogue. See the pages for cafés and takeaways.
  • You want to try it yourself first. Klugon has a published 7-day trial and self-serve setup, with no sales call.
  • You're in Europe. Klugon is run by a German company under the GDPR, with nine call languages including German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

How to switch from Slang AI to Klugon

Only switch if you've accepted that bookings will no longer go into your reservation platform by phone. If that's fine, here's the order.

  1. Decide where phone bookings go. Either into Klugon's calendar (with a block of tables) or the AI sends your online booking link. Write that down before anything else.
  2. Collect your information. Menu, allergen matrix, drinks list, opening hours, private dining pack, dress code, parking, accessibility and policies.
  3. Start the Klugon voice trial and set up the assistant with those documents.
  4. Write handover rules for the calls Slang AI used to forward to staff. Connect Slack (Business plan and up) so the manager sees flags during service.
  5. Test in the browser with your most common calls: table bookings, cancellations, menu and allergen questions, large parties.
  6. Add WhatsApp and Instagram if you want them, on the social agent.
  7. Go live after the trial converts. Buy a Klugon number and forward the restaurant line to it, at a quiet time. Ring it yourself.
  8. Run for two weeks before cancelling Slang AI. Check the inbox and insights daily, and tell your hosts what's changed, especially that guests won't get a confirmation text.

Does Klugon send booking confirmation texts?

No. Klugon sends no SMS and no automatic confirmations or reminders. The guest gets a confirmation and reference in the conversation itself. Slang AI's Core plan lists text links and confirmations.

Klugon has a 7-day free trial per product; a card is required and you can't buy a phone number until the trial ends. Slang AI doesn't publish a trial on its pricing page.

Is Klugon good for multi-site restaurant groups?

Not really. Klugon has one address per account and no multi-location features. A group would be better served by a restaurant specialist with location-level reporting.
